Assets

Kaikoura_New_Zealand_TNZ_-_AssetsThe objective of the Assets Program is to provide a program of research that will assist road and transport agencies in their efforts to minimise the whole of life cost of road infrastructure assets. The assets strategic research program is targeted to address the priorities identified in the Austroads Strategic Plan.

The role of the Assets Task Force is to develop and deliver a program this program. Key focuses of the program are providing optimal levels of service, catering to road user requirements and monitoring and reporting on performance. The Task Force promotes best practice in asset management through the development and maintenance of the Austroads Guide to Asset Management.

The focus of the Guide to Asset Management is the management and preservation of current physical assets. The guide:

  • Provides practitioners guidance for decision making with respect to good practice asset management at a network level.
  • Introduces overall general principals and the process of asset management
  • Identifies emerging issues or drivers of change
  • Points practitioners to further sources of information.
M7_-_Assets003

The Guide considers assets at a network level and can be grouped in the following way:

  • Parts 1, 2 and 3 deal with introducing the topic, community relations and setting strategic direction
  • Parts 4 and 8 relate to program development and asset value.
  • Parts 5, 6 and 7 deal with specific asset types

The full Guide to Asset Management set comprises of:

  • Part 1: Introduction to Asset Management
  • Part 2: Community and Stakeholder Requirements
  • Part 3: Asset Strategies
  • Part 4: Program Development and Implementation
  • Part 5: Pavement Performance
  • Part 5A: Inventory
  • Part 5B: Roughness
  • Part 5C: Rutting
  • Part 5D: Strength
  • Part 5E: Cracking
  • Part 5F: Skid Resistance
  • Part 5G: Texture
  • Part 5H: Performance Modelling
  • Part 6: Bridge Performance
  • Part 7: Road Related Assets Performance
  • Part 8: Asset Valuation and Audit

Weigh-in-motion Technologies and Users

WIMusersiteThe purpose of the Weigh-in-motion (WIM) site is a repository and source of knowledge about this very specialized and critical area.  The few existing Road Authority WIM experts are mostly close to retirement and there is currently no training available. There is a high risk this knowledge will be lost if there is nothing in place to capture this knowledge. The bulk of the site is the content of the WIM Manual, however relevant research, and new developments can be posted. The sites brings together experts from government agencies and industry providers and holds information on existing technologies, with a focus on on-road technologies.
