Task force

The role of the registration and licensing task force is to assist road and transport agencies in their efforts to improve the security and integrity of vehicle registration and driver licensing systems and to promote national consistency. The work of the task force is undertaken in the context of an increasing importance in the security and integrity of information contained in registration and licensing data. The task force is also the NEVDIS (National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System) management group.

Smartcard Driver Licence Interoperability Protocol (SLIP)

The SLIP working group reports to the Austroads registration and licensing task force. The SLIP working group has been given the specific task of achieving smartcard based driver licence interoperability, via the use of appropriate standards and specifications.

Queensland Transport is currently assessing the feasibility of upgrading its existing driver licence to a smartcard, to reduce fraud and increase privacy for licence holders. While other Australian jurisdictions do not currently have plans to implement smartcard driver licences, all have acknowledged the importance of continued mutual recognition and interoperability of driver licences when Queensland makes the transition. The mechanism for carrying out this work will be a nationally agreed document known as the Smartcard Licence Interoperability Protocol (SLIP). Once agreed, this protocol may progress to a formal Australian Standard.
